Man jailed after racist abuse and tyre slashing

A man who racially abused staff at a petrol station on Lynn Road in Wisbech before slashing the tyres of a van has been jailed for six months.

Lewis Marsh, 37, targeted the filling station on October 8 last year while it was temporarily closed for refuelling.

As soon as he entered the premises, he began verbally abusing two men, including making racist remarks.

Marsh then left the shop, produced a knife and attempted to puncture the tyres of an HGV but was unsuccessful.

He then slashed the tyres of a van parked on the site before crossing the road and watching as the victims discovered the damage.

Marsh returned to the scene and denied being responsible.

He was identified and arrested in Juke Street, Wisbech, three days later. Officers discovered a folding lock knife when they searched him.

Marsh, of no known address, admitted one count of criminal damage but denied racially aggravated criminal damage, using abusive words to cause harassment, alarm or distress and two counts of possessing a knife in public.

He was found guilty following a trial at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, October 8, and jailed for six months.

PC Copeland said: “Marsh’s behaviour was completely unacceptable and totally unprovoked.

“The victims were just going about their day when he decided to verbally abuse them and damage their property, seemingly completely at random.

“I’m pleased he was identified, apprehended and has now faced justice for his actions.”
