British wool takes centre stage in Norfolk bedmaker’s new campaign

Norfolk bedmaker puts British wool at heart of new TV campaign

A Norfolk family business is highlighting British wool, sheep farming and traditional manufacturing skills in a new television campaign showing how its mattresses are made.

Iron & Brass Bed Company launched the advert during Wool Month in October, following the journey from British sheep farms through to the finished mattress.

The film opens with company founder Amanda Oldfield tending to her own flock before showing stages of the manufacturing process, including preparing the wool, making the springs and hand-finishing the mattresses.

The company says it sources wool directly from British sheep farmers, agreeing a price before shearing, with the material traceable back to the farms and families which supplied it.

Its mattresses are manufactured in Britain, with processes including drawing wire for the springs, teasing the wool by hand and traditional side-stitching.

Iron & Brass Bed Company has more than 20 years of bedmaking experience and also produces made-to-order iron, brass and nickel bedframes.

Amanda said: “When you look at a finished mattress, so much of what makes it special is hidden. You don’t see the farmer tending their flock, feel the fleece becoming softer as it’s teased by hand, or meet the person carefully stitching the border.

“We wanted to open that world up. Starting with my own sheep made the film feel very personal, but it tells a much wider story about British farming and the skilled people who turn these wonderful natural materials into something we sleep on every night.”

The campaign also features the Made in Britain trademark, which is used to identify products manufactured in the UK.

Iron & Brass Bed Company says it is the first UK bedmaker to have its mattresses accredited with the trademark.

John Pearce, CEO of Made in Britain, said: “There’s something particularly fitting about a British bedmaker shining a light on the people and materials behind a good night’s sleep.

“Iron & Brass Bed Company’s commitment to British wool and manufacturing demonstrates how closely our agricultural and manufacturing industries are connected. From the farmers supplying the wool to the skilled craftspeople producing the finished mattresses, this is a great example of British businesses supporting one another.”

He added: “It’s especially encouraging to see the Made in Britain trademark featured so prominently in a national campaign, helping more people recognise where products are made and the expertise that goes into them.”

The television campaign launched at the beginning of October and forms part of the company’s wider focus on British materials and manufacturing.
