Heacham café to close for winter as owner blames parking charges

A café in Heacham is closing for the winter after its owner blamed parking charges for making it too expensive for customers to visit.

Heacham Halt Café, on South Beach, announced on social media that it was closing from November.

James David Moore said: “I would like to thank all our regular customers and holidaymakers for the last year.

“Unfortunately, due to the ongoing parking charges through the winter, we will be closed after Saturday as it’s not viable to open. Thank you again for your support throughout 2026.”

Mr Moore added that it was not cost-effective to open. “What the council don’t realise is that we are the only place on South Beach. Unlike Hunstanton where lots of other businesses are available.”

There are two council-operated car parks in Heacham and the council says charges apply 24-hours a day, seven days a week – even in winter months.

The South Beach car park has 20 spaces, and it costs £2.80 for one hour and £5.30 for two hours, £7.60 for three hours and £10 for up to 24-hours.

Customer Sandra Marshall also criticised the council parking charges. She told Mr Moore: “We came along a couple of weeks ago for a coffee, until we realised we had to pay for parking to use your café. You must lose so much custom because of this. A sad situation.”
