A Gaywood pizza maker has brought a national title home to King’s Lynn after winning Best Margherita at the UK Pizza Championship 2026.
Danny Child, owner of The Pizza Slice Guy, saw his Margherita voted the people’s favourite at the competition, adding another achievement to a family business inspired by authentic New York-style pizza.
Danny and his wife Lucy first developed their love of New York pizza during a trip to the USA in 2017. Two years later, during their honeymoon, they returned with a plan to learn more about the craft.
The couple visited Pizza School NYC and spent time learning from experienced pizza makers before returning to King’s Lynn, where they began building their own pizza business.
The Pizza Slice Guy started as a family venture, with Danny and Lucy transforming a white work van from scratch into the distinctive pizza truck now seen at events and private parties across Norfolk.
Since launching, the business has grown its reputation locally and further afield, with Danny also competing internationally, including at the World Pizza Championships in Las Vegas.
His latest success gives the Gaywood-based business a UK title.
Danny said: “Winning Best Margherita is an incredible feeling. We have put so much time, effort and love into our pizzas over the years, so to have people taste our Margherita and then choose it as their favourite is incredibly special.
“When we started this journey, we had a dream of bringing the kind of New York pizza we loved in America back to King’s Lynn. We never imagined that one day we would be celebrating a national championship title.
“What makes this even more special is that it is a People’s Choice award. Pizza is ultimately about making people happy, and having customers choose our Margherita means more to us than we can really put into words.
“We are incredibly proud to be based in Gaywood and West Norfolk. The support we have received locally has helped us build this business, and this award feels like something we can celebrate with everyone who has supported us along the way.”
The award marks another milestone for Danny and Lucy’s business, which has grown from an idea inspired by their travels into a recognised local food brand.
Danny added: “We are always looking at how we can make the next pizza better. Hopefully this gives people an even bigger reason to come and try what we do – but we will never stop trying to improve.”
