Firefighters who tackled some of the biggest blazes in Norfolk during an unprecedented summer have been thanked at a special reception in King’s Lynn.
The Mayor of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk, Councillor Steve Bearshaw, hosted the event at King’s Lynn Town Hall to recognise the work of fire crews stationed in West Norfolk for their work protecting local communities.
Firefighters battled an exceptional number of wildfires during a summer of hot, dry weather. Some of the largest fires were in West Norfolk, including a woodland blaze at Shouldham Warren, near King’s Lynn.
Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service attended 1,295 incidents across the county in August – its busiest month on record and a 26% increase on the same month last year.
A spokesperson for King’s Lynn and West Norfolk Borough Council said: “On behalf of the people of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk, thank you for your tireless endeavours, your professionalism and your continued commitment to keeping our communities safe.”
The reception took place on the same day that plans were announced for a new £600,000 training development at King’s Lynn South Fire Station, funded jointly by Norfolk County Council and the borough council.
The borough council has also recently signed the Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service Employee On-call Charter, pledging support for council staff who also work as on-call firefighters.
